Gehry's Design

TAKOMA PARK, MD—In a stunning move the Takoma Park City Council voted unanimously to endorse the hiring of renowned architect Frank O. Gehry to design the next phase of Takoma Park’s new Community Center. The council's endorsement places the final decision in the hands of Takoma Park voters in the form of a referendum in the November 8 election. Critics decry the vote as a way to minimize the controversy that has mired the community center project over that past few years—the latest setback being the delay of the grand opening ceremony. City Manager Barbara Burns Matthews disagrees. “You see, Mr. Gehry had a design without a site and we had a site in need of a design—Phase Two of the new community center, that is.”  (read more)
